359.05 lbs–Thank you for a great year!

September 13, 2011

We did it! Thanks to some great donations, we broke our total from 2010 by 15lbs. Eggplants, tomatoes, peppers, melons, cucumbers and cabbages were donated on Sunday, weighing in at more than 26 lbs. That brings our year-end total to 359.05 lbs. (And the donations still keep trickling in!) Thank you for your generosity in support of the Second Harvest Food Bank of Clark, Champaign and Logan counties!

We’re officially done for 2011. However, if your garden continues to produce, you can donate directly to the food bank. Details can be found here. In the meantime, we encourage you to fire up your compost piles and to start planning your vegetable garden for 2012. Fall is a great time to lay the groundwork for a great growing season.

As always, don’t hesitate to contact us with tips and ideas for making this program more successful in then years to come. Thank you again for your participation this year. May God bless you and your family, just as God has blessed this community with your generosity.

Today is the last day the Little Flower’s Big Harvest will be collecting donations of fresh produce for the season. Stations open at St. Teresa and St. Bernard at 8:00 and close at noon. 65 lbs right on the nose … thanks to some great donations. Nearly 30 lbs came from tomatoes of all varieties. An additional 20 lbs came in the form of gorgeous cucumbers. Add to that some beautiful fresh carrots, zucchini, peppers and yellow squash, and we round out a great donation.Thank you for your tremendous generosity.

Hot weather will continue for another week or so, but cool weather is on the way. Now is a great time to plant cool weather vegetables like radishes, spinach, lettuce and cabbage. And it’s also a good time to consider canning excess tomatoes, beans and peppers. Need help? Give us a call and we’ll get you connected with resources to keep veggies on your plate well into the fall and winter.

Donations for August 7: 54 lbs

August 11, 2011

It was  a great week for donations. 54 lbs were contributed at three different locations, bringing our year-to-date total to more than 80 lbs. Many thanks to folks who dropped off produce at St. Teresa and St. Bernard. Donations included zucchini, all varieties of peppers, broccoli, squash and a lot of fresh, beautiful tomatoes.

We also received some great fresh vegetables from our newest location, the parking lot on the corner of Sycamore and High Street in Springfield, Ohio. The team at Second Harvest Food Bank has transformed the vacant lot into a garden by installing 60 raised bed gardens–an oasis of green in the downtown. If you have occasion to pass by, take a look. They’re doing an excellent job.
